Uncompahgre Plateau

From June 2010
The snowy winter has left an emerald blue lake way up in the sky. It still baffles this lowland Ozark boy to see a natural lake resting at 9000 ft.

From June 2010
Gus, is 91 yrs old this year, and he's slowing. Its harder to get him out, but the Uncompahgre ride is his favorite. There is a natural lake or pond every mile or so and the temps are usually pretty cool. Today he wore his new Moab Cyclery shirt for the occasion. It started out white, but ended a dirty brown, having done its job keeping our old boy cool. And now, as I write, he sleeps.

From June 2010
Today was my first attempt at following my new coaches rules. Rule one was to ditch the clipless pedals. Using clip pedals I have managed to make my-self fairly asymmetrical, which is not a good thing for a human being. I've also been cut down to two easy rides a week for the coming month while we try to fix the damage I've done over the last 5 years. It's humbling to be taken down a few notches, but hopefully I'll be riding stronger on the other side.

With all the flowers now gone down in the desert, I will now subject my readers/followers to the "new" scene, happening now above 8000 ft!

The lakes and ponds are so pristine, for now, before all the cows are let loose to crap all over the place, bringing fly's and stench to an amazing high altitude wonderland. Do I eat beef? Yes! Do I think that cattle should graze fragile public land for a laughable fee? NO!

Mary and I get a good laugh out of this photo. Why? Because we always take this same photo. The background changes, but we always look the same.

I went "Over the Edge"

In case anyone was wondering, I have landed a new job. My new happy home is at Over the Edge Sports in Fruita CO. Our new crew is positively ready to rock and we feel great about the future.

Pictured below is Fruita's most recognizable citizen "Tater Tott" posing for a "Crazy Pitchure" with George Gatseos, OTE's new General Manager.

Moab 7! Rain and Water

From June 2010
I'm not sure if I could ever tire of the flaming red summer sunsets that are frequent in this land.

From June 2010
On this particular evening, Gus and I were driving to Moab in a nasty stormy wind. Not the kind of evening that you expect to see a light show.

From June 2010
However, as the view opened into Castle Valley, the Sun dropped below the cloud banks and illuminated the tips of all the mesa's and buttes.

From June 2010
I had been in a hurry to leave work, but was talked into a quick bight to eat by a friend. Had I not "relaxed" I would have missed this evenings gift.

From June 2010
A front row seat to the greatest show on earth.

From June 2010
Gus and I were not planning on using the tent, but as I came into Moab the sky's let loose a torrent of rain. I took cover at Tim's house. After the storm had passed we made our way to one of my favorite secret camping spots.

From June 2010
We really didn't need the tent, but had I not put it up we would have been wet for sure. Around 6 AM, in an instant, the day came alive as the Sun broke over the Moab Rim. The smell of wet rocks drying and damp sage was invigorating. I made toast on my dads 35 year old Coleman stove while Gus waited for his bowl of food. We were pretty happy with the world.

From June 2010
Tim met me for a ride. Our goal were some hidden pot holes that we new would be filled with water after the nights rain.

From June 2010
Already, much of the water was gone. The desert is thirsty and takes what it can get as fast as possible. The green that surrounded us told the tale, that water had been there recently.

From June 2010
Our potholes were about half full. Strange, as the storm was a strong one? Some were full, others were empty. Craig Childs writes about this phenominom in his book, "The Secret Knowledge of Water." He doesn't understand it, so I guess I never will either.

From June 2010

From June 2010
You don't get many days in June, in Moab, that are 74 degrees. Tim and I relished the crisp air, knowing that it wouldn't last long.

MOAB 6! Summer Light Show

How many people have a friend that would loan them a jeep, for as long as you might need it, for free? Well, we do. Mark Landblom, AKA Marock Obloma, happend to have a spare Jeep for me to use while we are trying to sell the house. That way Mary still has some transportation while I'm at work. Mark, you are the best! Thank You!

(Jeeps are just fun!)

The Jeep was in Moab, and unfortunately stuck in four wheel drive. After some pounding on the linkage I managed to get it into 2 wheel drive for the trip back to GJ. But first Mary was dead set on riding Amasa Back, against my better judgement.
From June 2010

Before the ride, Mary insisted that we eat Italian at Pasta Jays. During dinner, she was concerned that I was not eating enough of my meal. I reminded her that we hadn't ridden yet and that a full stomach would be rough in the 100 degree heat. I guess a year and half off the bike can make you forget things, like riding a truly challenging trail on a full pasta/red sauce stomach.

Well at least I didn't have to worry about her overdoing it. The constant want of her dinner to return to the outside world kept Mary moving pretty slow. While she lay on the rock I snapped pictures of the crazy summer light show, then we re-mounted and ripped back down. As I'm writing this, two days later, her hands are still doing quite well. We are seeing much improvement!
